Bottle Nose Dolphin Fathead

Bottle Nose Dolphin Fathead

We all know that this is one of the earth's most intelligent species, but did you know that its brain is larger than ours? This dolphin forms complex social organizations that rely on cooperation for hunting and for raising its young. It has a complicated language, and recent studies indicate that each dolphin has its own unique name. It also uses echolocation - just like a bat. Because it's so intelligent, it is easily trained and sometimes ends up in an aquarium doing tricks.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle Fathead

Loggerhead Sea Turtle Fathead

Powerful jaws and a large head earned the loggerhead sea turtle its name. It uses those powerful jaws to crack the hard shells of the clams and crabs it loves to eat. It roams the world to find those treats, traveling along coastlines rather than in the open ocean, and it may travel hundreds of miles to get to a nesting area.

Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey Fathead

Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey Fathead

This monkey has quite a fur coat: It can survive colder temperatures than any other primate but humans. It lives at high altitudes in southwest China, spending most of its life in the trees, searching for its favorite food - lichens. A sociable animal, the golden snub-nosed monkey lives in groups of up to six hundred members. It displays a wide range of vocalizations, and groups of monkeys sometimes even sing together in an arboreal chorus. Closely related to the black snub-nosed monkey, this sociable primate gets its name from its stubby sniffer.

Golden Frog Fathead

Golden Frog Fathead

Eat at your own risk. The golden frog is poisonous, and is actually a distant relative of the venomous poison dart frogs of South America. Though it's called golden, this frog comes in various shades of orange, yellow and red. These colors in nature are often used to give a warning like "Poison!" The golden frog gets its venom from eating certain types of ants.

Morpho Butterfly Fathead

Morpho Butterfly Fathead

One of the most strikingly beautiful of all butterflies, the brilliant blue morpho spends its short life in the rainforest. Its beauty is also a survival strategy; crystal structures in the upper side of the wings refract light and create flashes of blue and startle and discourage predators. The undersides of the wings are brown (for camouflage) and have eyespots that also help scare those predators away.

Snow Leopard Fathead

Snow Leopard Fathead

This gorgeous cat is perfectly adapted to its high-altitude home, with thick, warn fur, paws like big snowshoes, and a superlong tail that acts just like a scarf - it wraps around the snow leopard's face and head at night for extra warmth. Much like Indonesia's clouded leopard, this species is considered to be halfway between the "big cats" and smaller species - neither has the ability to roar. The elusive snow leopard is hunted illegally for its pelt, and its habitat is being lost as livestock are moved higher into its mountain home.

Malayan Flying Frog Fathead

Malayan Flying Frog Fathead

An aerial acrobat, this frog has specialized skin flaps and extra webbing on its fingers and toes to make it an expert glider. It spends its whole life in the tops of trees and only comes down near the ground to lay eggs in nests built of foam. When an egg hatches, the tadpole drops into the water below, where it will spend the first part of its life. Later, it will leave the water and make its journey up into the treetops.

Humphead Wrasse Fathead

Humphead Wrasse Fathead

This is one of the largest reef-dwelling fish—when allowed to reach full size, it can live 30 years and weigh up to 420 pounds! The humphead wrasse plays an important role in the overall health of coral reefs—It uses its strong teeth to grind up chunks of dead coral, looking for worms and other burrowing organisms inside. It also preys on some of the coral's predators and keeps their numbers in check. The wrasse is endangered due to overfishing, sometimes done with cyanide, which harms the surrounding ecosytem. When conditions are right, a female humphead wrasse can become a male.

Indri Lemur Fathead

Indri Lemur Fathead

The word "indry" is Malagasy for "look!" Early naturalists saw Malagasy people pointing at this striking animal and shouting "indry," and they thought that was the animal's name. In the early part of the 1900s, the indri was so common that it was said you could not travel within Madagascar without hearing its unique cry. Today this animal is endangered because deforestation is destroying its habitat.

Keel-Billed Toucan Fathead

Keel-Billed Toucan Fathead

Toucans are playful and social birds, living in small flocks in the rainforest canopy. They are not great flyers, and often move around by hopping from branch to branch. The keel-billed toucan is easily identified by its large rainbow-colored beak. Although that beak looks heavy, it is actually hollow and lightweight. It's very useful for plucking hard-to-reach fruit. These toucans can often be seen tossing pieces of fruit to each other.
